PALYA ART TOUR September 5th - 9th 2011
Flying Darwin into East Kimberley, Tanami Desert, Alice
Out of the opaque light of Darwin's skies we descended onto Warmun Communities dry dirt, not quite straight airstrip in East Kimberley to be met by members of Warmun Art Centre. A heart wrenching sight seeing all the work that went into the new Art Centre gallery literally washed away. Torrents came racing out of the hills, not along Turkey Creek as suspected. Artists came to say ‘Hello’, as we’ve done since before our hair went grey. We laugh. But the struggle of living is never funny in far off communities. Looking at the huge effort to put everything back in order, Shirley Purdie, Rusty Peters, Patrick Mung Mung, Betty Carrington and Lena Nyadbi to name a few people, yet again put their shoulder to the wheel. Paintings and carvings I feel are emerging with their own strong trajectory, like the flood itself.
Lajamanu’s Warnayaka Art is thumping with joy, force of knowing and colour. Dozens of people from the small highway sliced town came to join in the spectacle of watching the Palya Art Tour group drop from the sky and become mesmerized. Such power and energy radiated from the artworks hanging where-ever, on what-ever possible, the hall size building was alight. Artists talked us through paintings piled high on tables, pegged up on showing racks and hung from long lines. Lily Hargreaves generously danced her ownership and pride hours into our visit as her friends sung and clapped sticks. We couldn’t help dancing too - it’s a lot harder than it might look! The rest of the western world might be in doldrums but Warnayaka Artists know how to put out a whacking punch full of life.
On our journey went - there’s Balgo’s Warlayirti Artists to write about ... and Ikuntji at Haasts Bluff, Warlukurlangu in Yuendumu ... at each and every community, we recieved the generosity of spirit and kindness that has never stopped forthcoming and is, Indigenous Australia.
August 15th-19th 2011 Kimberley Rock Art Tour
Palya Art Tour. A reflective, awe inspiring journey into some of the most pristine country in the world
Post the Indigenous Art Award in Darwin a small group of us flew into the heart of Kimberley. Met by landowners we gently meandered deep down little worn tracks in a 4WD with enough provisions to last a week. Way in the depths of spirit country, resting in quiet gulleys of glittering waterfalls, utter peace was held in mind and heart whilst we were guarded - and warned - by figures seeped in rock.

Some of you may know of the temporary setback I’ve had since 2005 - glad to say ‘it’ (I’ve other names for the beast) - medicine calls it Poly Myalgia Rheumatica (PMR) - is finally releasing it’s grip. In another year or so I’ll be off cortisone, pain gone I’m assured, and back to moving freely. Some may know too of the awkward luck recently with torn tendons, cartilage, ligaments - but after excellent surgical attention, support from family and friends - to who I give a big thank you - I’m sliced, sawn, stitched, strapped and standing. Seven weeks in a wheel chair was one really good way to focus on the website! In a few months I’ll be back flying planes myself, making several quiet visits to artists and Traditional Owners at Art Centres, making sure everyone’s happy with the website and appropriate images are approved to go on-line. You are welcome to join me in my travels on Latest News, Best Wishes, Helen Read

“Yiwarra Kuju”, Cannning Stock Route, exhibition, which opened at the National Museum on 29th July took to it’s wings after four years of evolution. Paintings, in context with artists voices, actions, spiritual and tactile geography are suspended from black walls, flying indeed. May I suggest if you can’t get to “Yiwarra Kuju” just now then have the catalogue posted to you by the Museum: www.nma.gov.au ISBN 9781876944780
