Nestled in the southeast corner of the fifth biggest island in Australia is Nguiu on Bathurst Island, a township comprising some 2000 Tiwi language speakers. Tiwi Design, a busy, productive Aboriginal Incorporated body run by the executive committee and artists, administers in the creation of carvings, barks, fine art prints, paintings on canvas and paper, printed silks, cottons and linen, ceramics and woven fibre items.Tiwi Design artists create artworks in a modality that pays homage to the ancestors and yet are by definition intrinsically contemporary works. Distinctive for geometry and connections to ceremonial body painting, Tiwi Artists use natural earth pigment with hues and textures which are immediately recognisable. Paintings and artifacts have flown into shops and galleries around the world with significant success in both commercial and educational arenas.
