A colourful building lying in the small town of Lajamanu is home to the mostly Warlpiri speaking artists of Warnayaka Arts. Ancient and modern times emerge upon canvas planes in what is now Warnayaka's definitive style - swerving, boldly coloured acrylic paintings married to body designs, traveling stories, ceremonial places and food sources embedded in the Tanami Desert. Paintings find themselves visually grasping to the onlooker. Times are told of old people walking, walking the sand hills, spinifex, bush brushes; stories by people now living in Lajamanu with minds soothing over home's wide spaces, gentle winds, quiet, bird song, insect scuttles - eyes seeing further than visitors may dream possible.

Lajamanu is on traditional country of the Gurindji people who reside further north 100kms.  Warlpiri speakers were forcibly brought here from their homelands nearer Alice Springs, deposited in Lajamanu in the 1950’s 550 kms away - but walked back home. Only to be transported back to Lajamanu again. And walking back. Then people were asked who was prepared to move to Lajamanu, and so the artists settled.
